Habbo, formerly known as Habbo Hotel, is a 2D browser based social networking site. Habbo is not like your typical social networking site. While you do create a profile you can’t post photographs of yourself like with most social networking sites. Players create unique avatars and are given their own room in Habbo Hotel. Earn badges and achievements while making friends and upgrading Hotel room! The site is aimed specifically at teenagers from 13-18 years old. There are many things that you can do on the site, including chat online, and play a variety of games. All of the chat rooms are monitored which will ensure children are safe.
You can walk into a public room and just talk to whomever is there or if you already have a well established network of friends you can create a private room that allows people by invitation only. Every day players receive a new piece of furniture but if they want more, they’ll have to purchase it either with ‘pixels’ or ‘coins’. Habbo also encourages users to purchase furniture for their room, clothes for additional personalization and profile upgrades. You do this by purchasing coins, 25 coins cost about $5. To play games in Habbo you have to purchase coins, and then get game tickets.
The website is very popular, most people visit the site for half an hour per visit. There are around 7 million unique visitors per month. As of February 2011 over 203 million avatars have been registered. There are an average 18 million unique visitors monthly, and 100,000 avatars are being created every day.
Who would I recommend the application to?
Habbo is great for children looking for a great online game; it’s a fantastic way to make new friends in a safe child friendly environment. Of course it’s also important that you supervise your children on the internet.
