“There are zombies on your lawn,” sings a cheerful sunflower and sways from side-to-side. Zombies are creeping on your lawn, and your garden is your last line of defense against brain-eating cannibals. By planting various seeds in strategic locations around your lawn you may be able to hold off the onslaught and keep them from entering your house and eating your brain.
Plants vs Zombies is a tower defense action game developed by PopCap Games. The game involves a homeowner using many varieties of plants to repel an army of zombies. New seed packs are gained by completing levels, while the number of slots can be increased through purchases with in-game money. At the start of a level, the player is shown the vario
us types of zombies to expect for and is also given the opportunity to select which seed packs to take into the level. In order to plant a seed, the player must have collected a specific amount of sunlight. Sunlight is generated by special plants which provide sunlight at regular intervals. The playing field is divided into a number of horizontal “lanes”, and a zombie move towards the player’s house along lane (the main exception is if it has scented a garlic). In the “backyard” levels that include a swimming pool, seeds must be planted on lily pads on water spaces, while on the roof levels, all seeds must be planted in flower pots. Certain plants are highly effective against specific types of zombies, such as a “Magnet-shroom” that can remove metallic items from a zombie, such as helmets and ladders. In later levels, players have to purchase u
pgrades so as to adapt their lawn-mower to new environments like pools or rooftops. The zombies also come in a number of types that have different attributes, in particular, speed, damage tolerance. As the player progresses in the game, the zombies will include those wearing makeshift armour, those that are able to jump or fly over plants, and even a dancing “Michael Jackson” zombie that is able to summon other zombies from the ground. PvZ provides three additional modes — minigames, puzzles, and survival. The minigames and puzzles are all variations on the zombie and plant theme. Survival mode has you defending one lawn from wave after wave of progressively more difficult zombies.
