Urban Rivals is online multi-player trading card game, that is played right on web browser. Both the site and card designs use a unique comic art style. New players are given 8 cards at random which is the minimum amount required for a deck. At the start of each match, both players are randomly given 4 cards from their decks and chose which of these cards will participate in each of the match’s four rounds. Each card represents a character (some of which are based on real people or well-known fictional characters). Each character has specific Power and Damage values, and belongs to a clan. Players gain experience after each match. Cards gain new abilities and increase in power as they rank up while players gain access to higher level channels and earn ‘clintz’ with which to purchase new cards. During account registration, players are asked what type of deck they would like to start with:
Action – Fight mean and strong. Emphasis on brute power and damage.
Danger – Unnerve your opponents with dirty tricks. Emphasis on sneaky abilities.
Cool – Keep control and protect your life points. Emphasis on ‘control’ cards that disable opponent’s abilities.
After each fight, players receive battle points. These points are used to upgrade a player’s level. More points are earned from fighting against a player with a higher ranking, from having a character defeat a higher level opponent, or leveling up after a fight. Characters receive experience after each fight, with which they level up and become stronger. Characters earn more experience when fighting characters at higher level and when they win. A player’s level is based on their current number of battle points. When a player reaches Level 5, they can join a Guild. Upon reaching Level 10, they can create their own Guild. Upon reaching Level 15, they can play in ELO mode. A player receives a “Leader” card every 5 levels.
